Dorothy has been finding people ‘in the grave’ of a loved one who has already departed, such as their beloved mother or rather.  They so loved this person that they went to the grave with him or her rather than letting go.  People are also in purgatory – a place of purification after death, according to the Catholic religion – and affecting you from that place after their death.  The ‘living dead’ can also be in purgatory.
